So, the moral of the story is that I didn't need the HDMI switch at all (and I now have two remaining HDMI inputs should I need them)-so maybe it was a blessing in disguise that it was acting up. (There's also a setting on the receiver for "HDMI control"-I don't know what that does, and for now I'm pretty happy with how it's functioning so I'm going to leave that alone for now.)

In this mode, the TV speakers are active.Ī nice bonus to this arrangement is that the TV speakers automatically shut off when the receiver is powered up-previously, I had to mute the TV when using the HT speakers because there was a slight syncing issue that created a weird echo effect. While I was in there, I discovered that my receiver has a "standby through" mode which allows me to flip through the three HDMI inputs with the receiver still in standby mode. Initially, I was a little bummed because there was an on-screen display for volume adjustment coming from the receiver-but I was able to turn it off by shutting off the "short message" in the receiver settings. I decided to go ahead and use the receiver as the "hub" as suggested above, plugging in all of my HDMI devices into that, and then sending a single HDMI cable back to the TV. My receiver is a Yamaha RX-V471, with four HDMI inputs. OK, got home and spent the last hour fiddling.įor starters, thanks for the advice. Or, I could get a different brand and see if I have the same issue with that (this CSRET one is the most similar: ). I could just reorder the same Kinivo switch on the off chance the one that I got is defective (although that too seems unlikely since it's highly rated on Amazon).

I've got a free return through Amazon for the switch so I'm going to go ahead and do that just to start over-but now I'm uncertain what to do next. I suppose the other possibility is the HDMI cable that connects the switch to the TV, but that's a brand new decent-quality Monoprice one so I kinda doubt that it's defective. I didn't have any issues like this prior to installing the switch, so I'm still leaning toward that as being the culprit. I finally was able to get things working again by unplugging everything and starting fresh. Then I plugged the Chromecast directly into the TV (bypassing the switch) and I got the same sound-but-no-picture. When the screen went gray the second time, I first rebooted the Chromecast, but that resulted in sound but no picture. The second time I tried it, I had similar issues-this time I tried to be more scientific about what was causing the problem, but I had trouble isolating it.

I fiddled around with the connections, reset the Chromecast, and was eventually able to watch a 2-hour show without issues.

The first time I tried it, the picture would occasionally cut out for a split second, until finally the entire screen went sparkly gray. Right off the bat, I had problems viewing the Chromecast through the switch. I recently got a Kinivo 301BN three-port HDMI switch to use for Blu-Ray and Chromecast (my Panasonic TV has just two HDMI inputs, so I have the cable box plugged into the first one-the switch is plugged into the second one, and the Blu-Ray player and Chromecast are plugged into the switch).
